Trump and the Populist Tradition

President-elect Donald Trump's disregard for democratic institutions, his angry appeals to the working class, and his willingness to paint his political opponents as national enemies are reminiscent of authoritarian Latin American populists. Whether, like Argentina's Juan Peron and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, Trump can also erode the systems of checks and balances that underpin US democracy remains to be seen. So far, the president-elect has shown little interest in respecting either the text of the US constitution or the country's unofficial but long-established bipartisan norms.
