Since the 1970s, there has been a resurgence of interest in emotion amongst philosophers and psychologists. Interaction between these and other disciplines on the topic of emotion is increasingly widespread. Philosophical work has been informed and inspired by the findings of scientific research. Similarly, scientists studying emotion have drawn inspiration, ideas, and conceptual frameworks from philosophers. These interactions have led to greater understanding of the emotions, and helped construct a conceptual repertoire that is at least partially shared. This special section of Emotion Review is premised on the view that interdisciplinary work on the emotions can be further enhanced, in important ways, by increased interaction between philosophers, psychologists, and psychiatrists. A survey of the psychiatric literature suggests that pathologies of emotion are implicated in many conditions, including schizophrenia, depression, depersonalization, psychopathy, autism, and certain circumscribed delusions. For example, altered emotions and feelings are closely associated with changes in belief forma-tion processes, theoretical and practical reasoning, temporal experience, interpersonal understanding and interaction, a sense of familiarity and reality, and the experience of self. In addition, some of the recent literature in psychiatry points to the view that the "bodily feelings" involved in or associated with emotion are not, as is often assumed, merely "perceptions of bodily states"; they are also integral to experiences of entities outside of the body, including people.
