Heavy metals in the edible muscle of shrimp from coastal lagoons located in Northwest Mexico.

This study examined the levels of cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the edible muscle of 2 shrimp species (Litopenaeus vannamei and L. stylirostris) collected from 6 coastal lagoons (Altata-Ensenada del Pabellon (AEP), Verde Camacho, Huizache-Caimanero (HC), Los Laureles (LL), Pescadero, and Mexcaltitan) in the northwest coast of Mexico. These 2 species are important shellfish resources in northwest of Mexico. A total of 30 shrimps were obtained from each lagoon, and heavy metal contents were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The highest mean Cd, Pb and Zn levels (0.89+or-0.02, 4.5+or-0.5, and 31.4+or-0.3 micro g/g dry weight (d.w.), respectively) were found in shrimps collected from the AEP lagoon, while the highest mean Co and Cu values (1.4+or-0.1 and 20.0+or-0.5 micro g/g d.w., respectively) were observed in shrimps from the HC lagoon. Shrimps from the LL lagoon had the highest mean Fe level (7.6+or-0.7 micro g/g d.w.). It is concluded that the different levels of heavy metals found in shrimps collected from different coastal lagoons may be a consequence of different concentrations of heavy metals in the sediments and environment..
