Transition Towns (TT) is a large-scale social experiment designed to assist communities in dealing with climate change and diminishing supplies of cheap energy (peak oil). The movement has virally spread since the first Initiative was set up in Totnes by Rob Hopkins in 2005. There are now 220 official and a further 200 unofficial Transition Towns in the UK from Cheltenham to Edinburgh, Nottingham to Northampton, Chepstow to Cambridge, with many more set up locally in every major city. In London there were only two Initiatives three years ago; now there are nine just in the Borough of Camden. So why are people enthusiastic about participating in this movement that is popping up all over the place?
