UNILINE CALLS FOR URGENT REVIEW OF ROOFING SAFETY STANDARDS

Uniline Safety Systems has criticised the European Standard for anchor points, EN 795, for not going far enough to ensure the safety of users of roof fall protection systems. Under the current standard there is no requirement to test a roof anchor for a cable fall protection system on an 'as built' structure. Instead, equipment can be awarded the standard by simply applying a static load to an anchor fixed on a meter square of roof sheet on a steel framework to find out at what point it yields. A safety factor of 1.5 is then applied to the ultimate load to give a system design load that sets the upper limit of force that can be applied to the anchor.
