Effects of Combined Aerobic and Resistant Training on Lipid Profile and Glycemic Control in Sedentary Men

Objective: The purpose of this research was to assess the effects of twelve weeks of three types of physical training (aerobic, resistance and concurrent) on circulating lipid profile and glycemic control in sedentary men.Materials and methods: Forty sedentary men were randomly assigned into four groups: aerobic; resistance; concurrent resistance-aerobic training; and control. Subjects trained for 30 min per day, three days per week for twelve weeks. The aerobic group worked at an intensity of 60 - 705 reserve heart rate, whereas the resistance group performed three sets of 10 repetitions at 70 percent of one repetition maximum (1RM). The concurrent program performed aerobic exercise at 60 - 70 %of heart reserve rate for 20 minutes and two set of 10 repetitions at 70% 1RM. Blood samples were collected prior to the start of the training program and 24 hours after the termination of the program to determine lipid profile. Anthropometric measurements were also made.Results: There was no change in BMI in any group after training (P > 0.05). VO_(2peak) and 1RM leg press significantly increased and the most decrease occurred in the sum of 3 skin fold and body fat percent following the exercise program in the concurrent exercise group while the highest level of increase in 1RM bench press and decrease in waist to hip ratio was detected in resistance training group (P > 0.05). All the three groups showed significant decrease in resistance to insulin, and the level of insulin in their blood test (P > 0.05). This percent of change was highest for insulin level and the resistance towards insulin comparing to the other factors in this research.Conclusion: The results of this research indicated that the lipid profile of young sedentary male subjects does not change due to the type of training, whereas some of their anthropometric characteristics and resistance to insulin was improved.
