Firewood gathering is largely determined by the characteristics of theenvironment. Nevertheless, within the natural constraints a vast array ofhuman behaviours can exist. These are particularly detectable in sites witha high temporal resolution, such as lakeshore settlements. Communities makechoices according to technical, social, cultural and economic criteria whichlead to specific transformations of the environment. The Neolithic site ofArbon-Bleiche 3 (Lake Constance, Switzerland) has allowed a description ofthese sets of choices and constraints in a context where determinisms, whethersocial (few nearby contemporaneous villages) or environmental (abundanceof vegetal resources), are limited. Since the exploitation of firewood is partof a larger technical system, the anthracological study sheds new light onhow Neolithic societies evolved in interaction with their environment.
