Neuroscience Influences in International Journal of Play Therapy Articles

When one searches through previous issues of International Journal of Play Therapy (IJPT, 1992-2015) for articles that include some reference to neuroscience or neurobio-logical processes, one will find many. The term neurobiology yields 12 articles; the term neuroscience yields 18; and the term brain, 41. Over the course of 24 years, there have been more than 50 articles that mention, explore, or integrate neuroscience aspects with play therapy. The further back one looks, the fewer articles one will find. With this in mind, to date, "much of what has been written about and we refer to or cite comes from four primary domains of neuroscience research: attachment, trauma, disruptive disorders, and developmental disorders" (Hudspeth & Matthews, 2015, p. 590) The first issue of IJPT provides a good example of how neuroscience research has change how we explain aspects of human existence displayed during play therapy. In this issue, three articles pertained to attachment (Brody, 1992; Glazer-Waldman, Zimmerman, Landreth, & Norton, 1992; Mills & Allan, 1992). At this time, the influences of trauma on attachment were described primarily in terms of dysfunctions of self and self-other relationships.
