Cost and Returns from Milk Production in Faizabad District of Uttar Pradesh

The present study was conducted in the faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh using multistage stratified random sampling design. A sample of 200 households was selected probability proportional to size of holding. The households were classified into three categories viz. landless farmers (no land), marginal farmers (0-1 hactare) and small farmers (1-2 hactares) of land. The total cost of milk production per lactation was Rs. 21393.33 and Rs. 13260 for buffaloes and cows, respectively. Out of which feedcost alone accounted for 45.59 percent and 54.27 percent. Labour charge was more (40.24%) in buffaloes as compared to cows (32.07%). The interest on animal value was more (6.18%) in case of buffalo as compared to cows (4.79%). The cost of milk productionper litre was much higher in case of buffaloes than that of cows; Similarly milk production was also higher in buffaloes than cows. The per litre cost of milk production was Rs. 8.46 and Rs. 9.18 for cows and buffaloes, respectively. The total return per animal per lactation was Rs. 30066.67 and Rs. 17150.0 for buffaloes and cows, respectively. The contribution of return from milk was the major item of total return viz. 92.99 percent and 91.55 percent for respective groups of buffaloes and cows. The net profit in case of buffalo was higher (Rs.8673.33) as compared to cows (Rs. 389.00).
