NMC recognises failings

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has apologised for its failings. At a press conference, the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) provided its final report on the strategic review of the Council and the content is hard hitting. This final review follows the publication of the interim report published in April 2012. Many nurses and midwives have been embarrassed by their regulatory body's long-standing poor performance. In January 2012, the CHRE was asked by the Minister for Public Health, Anne Milton, to undertake a strategic review of the NMC to identify why it was failing to improve, with specific interest in the way it handles (or fails to handle) cases of nurses' and midwives' fitness to practice. Feedback was received from a variety of external stakeholders including the Royal College of Nursing and the four Chief Nursing Officers of the UK.
