Clearance of Colloidal Carbon from the Blood of African Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus)

The rate of clearance of colloidal carbon from the blood of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) over a period of 90 minutes following intravenous injection of 0.5ml of colloidal carbon was investigated. Six catfish of average weight 230-250g were injected with 0.5ml colloidal carbon. The clearance of injected colloidal carbon from the blood was continuous and uninterrupted in the entire test fish used. The values for 0, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60 and 90 minutes respectively were 17.5 +-11.02, 21.0+-4.63, 27.0 +-7.41, 40.5 +-14.25, 46.8 +-14.58, 56.0 +-20.84, 62.0 +-20.99, 75.8 +-16.83, 78.6 +-17.95 and 86.6 +-5.32. The relevance of the clearance of carbon and other particulate and non particulate antigens are discussed.
