Effect of long term feeding of urea molasses liquid diet (UMLD) on ovarian activity in crossbred heifers

Eighteen crossbred heifers of about 17-19 months of age were randomly allocated to three different groups. Animals of group I (control) Were fed with concentrate mixture and wheat straw, group II (experimental I) was given UMLD as sole diet and group III (experimental II) was fed on UMLD and wheat straw @ 500 g/100 kg body weight. The heifers fed solely on UMLD-decreased their body weights @ 88.6 g daily during the period of 300 days of experiment, while in control group, there was a gain of 420 g/day. The entire genital organs of the heifers fed either on UMLD or UMLD plus wheat straw were poorly developed as compared to control. There was reduction in ovarian activity in UMLD supplemented groups. In experiment II, the revival diet was offered to UMLD fed groups similar to control and it was observed that after a period of three months the heifers regained their ovarian cyclicity similar to heifers fed control rations.
