The Brite-Euram project no. BE-7107 (contract BRE2-CT94-0913): Product dealt with the development of an advanced computer system for the automated product design and manufacturing of dies for advanced 3D-forms in the porcelain industry. The approach to artistic machining design was two-fold in order to allow efficient handling of the very complex surfaces used: base geometry (CAD) and reliefs (with all details). Major developments were the 2D- and 3D-digitising systems for relief generation, user interfaces for a comfortable integration of computer and artist, Knowledge Based System (KBS) integration to acquire experience that cannot be formulated in an algorithmic way, a process simulation module where an approximate and fast analysis of the design was performed previous to machining, final validation, and lastly, an optimised machining module for efficient handling of complex problems.
