Canola/rapeseed outlooks: Canada and China

Of the 14.7 million acres (almost 6 million hectares) planted to canola in Canada in 2007/08, roughly 10 to 15% were of high- oleic varieties, said Chris Anderson, vice president of crop production with the Ca-nola Council of Canada. The market for hybrid canola oil is being driven by the push to remove trans fatty acids from foods, he noted, which should translate into increased acreage in the year ahead. With commodity prices at record highs, however, hybrid seed producers will have to offer incentives for farmers to add acres in 2007/08.
