India has the unique distraction of being the largest producer and consumer of tea in the world. The progress since independence has been phenomenal. The industry has established a multidimensional growth i.e. growth in the area, number of tea estates, yield per hectare, etc. Due to climatic reasons, tea cultivation in India is confined to some specific states like Assam, West Bengal, Tripura, Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh. These states produce more than 98 per cent of total production and Assam alone produces not less than 50 per cent of the total. The growth in tea production in these states has been achieved in two ways: A) Horizontal Growth - the growth by extending tea cultivation in traditional areas as well as in non-traditional areas. B) Vertical Growth - the growth by improvement in yield rate per hectare.
