摘要

Arabica coffee was introduced in Nepal around the year 1944 AD when seed was brought from Burma and planted by two or three farmers of Ampchaur village in Gulmi District, Lumbini zone, Nepal. For many years it was grown only by a few farmers, it wasn't until 1977 when tile Agriculture Development Bank of Gulmi district decided to provide loan for coffee cultivation and that a small nursery-was established and more area was planted. Since then the area under coffee cultivation has grown from less than 1/2 hectare ((1,200 trees) to almost 300 hectares (more than 6,00,000 trees). More recently, other areas in Nepal have become interested in coffee production and currently small pockets of coffee are being grown throughout the country. A few of the districts engaged, to some extent, in coffee cultivation are Palpa, Baglung, Shyangja, Gorkha, Chitwan, Jhapa, Ilam, Parbat, Myagdi, Arghakhachi, Kaski, Sindhupalchoke, Nuwakot, Solukhumbu. Palpa remains the highest producer of coffee.
