Quite a long time ago, in the early seventies of this century, Birendra Chandra Ghose, Vice Chairman of Indian Tea Planters' Association, Jalpaiguri, for the years 1948, 1949 and 1950, prepared a valuable paper on the development of tea industry in the district of Jalpaiguri, covering a period of hundred years, 1869-1968. In the preparation of this paper the author consulted some of the old records and books, available only in the Record Room of the District Collectorate and of the Divisional Commissioner, Jalpaiguri. As this paper is enriched with information adequate in documenting Jalpaiguri's tea industry in the yester years, this journal has been serialising the chronicle. The author unfolds here brisk activities connected with the establishment of tea estates in Jalpaiguri Duars. In this part of the chronicle, venture made by late Gopal Chandra Ghose has been detailed. The readers would get more account of tea estates established during the period 1875 to 1900 A.D. But the tempo of starting this business was very low during the period 1901 to 1910 A.D., according to the findings of the author. This period has been vividly picturised in this part.
