Therapeutic efficacy of atropine alone and in combination with DAM was seen in buffalo calves acutely poisoned with chlorpyrifos (50 mg/kg b wt). The administration of atropine sulphate (0.5 mg/kg, 1/4th iv and 3/4th im and repeated 4-7 times by im route on the reappearance of toxic symptoms) either alone or in conjunction with DAM (30 mg/kg, iv) failed to protect animals against chlorpyrifos induced lethality but, prolonged the survival time of poisoned calves from 4-6 hr to 29-40 and 36-60 hr, respectively. None of these two treatments was effective in reversing the chlorpyrifos induced alterations in blood esterases, plasma levels of transferases, phosphatases, proteins, creatinine and blood levels of glucose and urea nitrogen.
