Patterns of pod and seed growth during fruit development in garden pea genotypes.

A total of 10 garden pea genotypes, which were sub-grouped into 5 early and 5 mid-season types, were utilized for studying the sequence of pod and seed growth during their development in New Delhi, India, during the 2002/03 and 2003/04 rabi seasons. The sequence of changes in fresh and dry weight of pods and grains, and growth in terms of length and width of developing pods were evaluated. The increase in length was significant until 30 days after flowering in all genotypes except GP-17, in which significant increase in pod length was noticed until 25 days after flowering. Pod width increased until 30 days after flowering in all genotypes except GP-4, in which an increase in pod width was observed until 35 days after flowering. Fresh weight of the developing pod increased significantly till 35 to 40 days after flowering in different genotypes, while the fresh weight of grains per pod increased significantly until 40 days after flowering. Dry weight of the developing pod and grains increased continuously until 45 days after flowering in all genotypes.
