Effect of Statin Treatment of Thyroid Size and Thyroid Nodule in Dislipidaemic Patients

Introduction:Statin (i.e. Atorvastatin, Rosuvastatin, Simvastatin, Lovastatin etc) inhibits the enzyme HMC-CoA reductase enzyme & thus decrease the biosynthesis of cholesterol & this lead to increase hepatic LDL receptor activity & accelerated clearance of circulating LDL-c, resulting in a dose-dependent reduction in plasma levels of LDL-C. Statins also reduce plasma triglycerides in dose related fashion. Beside this common action, statin also has anti-proliferative action in some tissue including Thyroid. A thyroid nodule is a mass of any size distinguishable from surrounding thyroid tissue. In this study statin effect on Thyroid volume & the frequency & size of nodules were determined.
