Apical dominance is inhibition of growth of lateral buds under the influence of growing terminal buds. Number of buds sprouted on a cane after pruning, the ratio of length of terminal shoots to that of sub terminal shoots and total shoot length per cane at a constant bud load are the measures of apical dominance. Location of subsequent bud on a cane is on opposite side of a cane. Therefore, the effect of apical dominance of a terminal bud is not on the second bud from the tip, but is on the third bud(Chadha and Shikhamany, 2). The degree of the apical dominance varies with the climate with in a variety. Olmo (4) reported higer degree of apical dominance in tropics than in the temperate conditions. The variation in the genotype and rootstocks influence on the degree of apical dominance is attributed to the endogenous levels of auxins synthesized in the growing tips and the cytokinins in the roots. Auxin promotes apical dominance while, the cytokinin suppresses it. This investigation was undertakento know the influence of rootstocks on apical dominance in Thompson Seedless.
