When Harry Ricardo formed Engine Patents Ltd as a 30-year-old in 1915, his company built engines for the odd fishing boat in Shoreham harbour, but nothing more notable than that. Not initially, at any rate. Then the Royal Naval Air Services got in touch and asked if he could sort out the reliability issues of their WW1 tanks, whose 105bhp Daimler engines were prone to failure. Some 8000 tank engines later, and with the reliability issues successfully designed out, Harry Ricardo then bought the land where Ricardo plc's main engineering HQ now stands in Shoreham-on-Sea. And the rest, as they say, is history.
