IN THE FIAT Panda Trekking's tracks comes the 500L version. Like the Panda, the 500L Trekking has more ride height (10 per cent), grip-hunting, brake-based 'Traction+' electronics and mud and snow tyres as it takes on the Mini Countryman. A ￡700 premium over the 500L's top-dollar Lounge trim (which boasts a panoramic glass roof, touchscreen and rear parking sensors) also brings 17-inch alloy wheels and plenty of bodywork add-ons. There's also City Brake Control, which, among other skills, uses lasers to detect impending obstacles before applying the stoppers for you. That helps to make it cheaper to insure than other 500Ls, but the Trekking's slightly poorer economy pushes diesel variants up a tax band.
