We get very used to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) becoming all overexcited by the latest registration figures. That's all very well, but it doesn't seem to allow for the phenomenon known as pre-registration. We are not supposed to talk about that, of course; it's a big secret. But it does show that the numbers aren't quite all they seem - and that leads us to ask just how huge the used car market actually is.
