ALTHOUGH VOLVO has been doing green models (such as biodiesels) for years, it's been slow to give them a catchy label like Volkswagen's BlueMotion and Ford's Econetic ranges. Volvo's take on this eco-tech is called DRIVe, and the first model to benefit is the C30. Many of the tweaks are visual, but several important changes lie under the skin. For starters, the 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine has been retuned and now emits 4g/km less CO{sub}2 than the standard unit. Low-resistance tyres trim CO{sub}2 by a further 2.5g/km, as do taller third, fourth and fifth gears. Even the gearbox oil has been changed to save a further 0.5g/km.
