Isolation of bacteria was attempted from 50 carcasses of poultry. Different types of bacterial organisms isolated were Escherichia coli (39 cases), Salmonella Pullorum 9,12 (5), Salmonella Gallinarum 9,12 (9), Salmonella Enteritidis 9,12:g,m (5), Proteus vulgaris (9), Klebsiella pneumoniae (3), Citrobacter freundii (3), Clostridium perfringens (2) and Corynebacterium pyogenes (1). Fourteen different serotypes [02 (11), 04 (7), 07 (1), O20 (5), 022 (4), 024 (3), 056 (6), 071 (4), 078 (7), 083 (2), O101 (6), O120 (5), 0139 (1) and 0152 (3)] of E. coli were isolated. Five strains were untypeable and 9 were rough. Antibiogram pattern revealed all bacterial agents were most resistant to bacitracin, lincomycin and oxytetracycline. Majority of isolates were sensitive to ceftrioxone, cefuroxime, amoxyclav, chloramphenicol, gentamycin and amoxycillin. A rational use of antibiotics in treatment and prophylaxis after in vitro antimicrobial sensitivity testing is suggested.
