Impact of Dairy Cooperatives on the Milk Production, Consumption and Marketed Surplus Pattern on the Members

A study was conducted to know the impact of being the member of dairy co-operative societies on milk production, consumption and marketed surplus pattern in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. The milk production, consumption pattern as was perceivedby the farmers of Krishna district were significantly (P< 0.01) different between the farmer groups based on land holdings and social status, whereas the marketed surplus was found to be non-significant in member households. The values of production, consumption and marketed surplus of milk among different animal holders (1-4 milch buffaloes) both in member and non-member households were significantly (P< 0.01) different. The milk consumption was higher in member households and a significant (P< 0.01) difference was observed between two categories of farmers based on and holdings, social status and animal holdings. The marketed surplus was significantly (P<0.01) higher among member farmers belonging to small/marginal farmers than the three animal holders and corresponding categories of non-member households. The per capita consumption was higher for small/marginal farmers, forward caste and also large herd size groups when compared to agricultural labour, backward caste and low herd size, respectivelyboth in member and non-member households. There exists a significant (P< 0.01) difference in the per capita consumption of milk between the two farmer groups based on land holding, social status and herd size, particularly one animal and two animal holders, both for member and non-member households. The disposal pattern of milk varied between member and non-member farmers, where in the former dispose of 95 per cent of milk to societies, 2.86 per cent to private dairies, 1.24 per cent to focal vendors,0.90 per cent to others against 0 1, 46, 12, 46 and 7.88 per cent by later to the corresponding marketing agencies, respectively. The price paid from among different marketing agencies have paid more, the local vendors and others (14 to 14.75) whereas the societies paid only Rs. 9.50 per litre based on fat percentage of milk.
