I have a few friends working for the metal detector manufacturers, and I have heard for years of the existence of "knock-off metal detectors made to imitate the well-known brands and models used in gold prospecting. In the beginning these were fairly unsophisticated efforts, with the crooks creating fakes by slapping stickers of major brand names on very basic, Chinese-made machines. These simple fakes fooled very few, but the target market of these counterfeit detectors was prospectors in third world countries who weren't familiar with the look and feel of the major brands.
