After comparing all the different technology options, it becomes clear that hybrid technology represents a realistic solution for drastically reducing emissions, including CO{sub}2. When comparing vehicle CO{sub}2 e-missions, it is necessary to take into account not only the emissions when the vehicle is in operation, but also the emissions from the upstream processes, such as mining, refining, reforming, transport and filling up with fuel, as these vary significantly depending on the type of fuel, Figure 1. This concept is referred to as "Tank to Wheels" and the fuel production and distribution component is known as "Well to Tank". Combining these two concepts results in "Well to Wheels". A meaningful approach to future prospects is to compare the CO{sub}2 emissions of hybrid vehicles in terms of Well to Wheels with those of other technologies, such as petrol engines, diesel engines, CNG engines and fuel cells.
