A rubbish-strewn vacant block of land in Sydney's inner west has undergone an extreme makeover since 2003 to blossom into a bountiful community garden. Along the way it nas oecome a much-loved social hub and transformed the lives of its vegie gardeners. A former cabinetmaker, Tony is the garden's handyman. He's been involved for more than two years, doing odd jobs as required. His interest in vegies had previously been limited to "dabbling in tomatoes", now he's an avowed fresh-grown fan. "We often duck in to grab something for dinner. We stick to the more traditional vegies but I've learned about kumera...that you can actually eat the leaf and boil it up for soup. Other countries get more out of a plant than Western societies. There's no waste; all of the plant gets used."
