FROZEN IN TIME

In some of the harshest conditions on Earth, Mawson's Hut stands testament to the endurance of Antarctic explorers. I'm jolted awake. It's 3 a.m. and I'm lulled in and out of sleep by the ship's lurching on the Southern Ocean. Slumber comes in sets, broken every few minutes as my head slides into the bunk frame and my stomach is left somewhere near the ceiling. "Like being in a washing machine strapped to a rollercoaster," is how one fellow expeditioner describes it. It sure is one hell of a ride, but following in the footsteps of Sir Douglas Mawson was never going to be easy.
