摘要

SANDY MCDONALD tells his story over coffee and biscuits in the spartan tearoom of Mossman Agricultural Services - known as Mossag. A sugarcane grower "from up Saltwater Creek way" 10 km north, he's red-faced, blue-overalled, aged 60, and working two days a week as Mossag's storeman. "Dad raised six kids on our 46 ha of cane, and we brought up our son there," Sandy says. "But now, both myself and my wife work off the farm. We can't make a living from cane alone - even if it doubled in price." Outsidefumes the stack of Mossman Central Mill, operated by the farmer-owned, century-old cane-crushing company. A further minute's walk is Mossman's centre. The fig-decked Far North Queensland town sits in a dreamy tropical landscape between the Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef.
