One of the more difficult things many businesses have to get their minds around is the need to invest in people. For a great number that investment is limited to techncial skilling: undertaking chemical accreditation courses or attending field days on the latest varietal performance trials. Far less common is the business that continually re-invests in the overall perfomance skilling of its management and staff. Managers should ask themselves the question: how much have I re-invested in technical skilling versus management skilling. It is common to see re-investment in time spent upgrading irrigation skills and knowledge, however training in business strategy, technncial business analsysis, staff communication and motivation might only be undertaken once. As one grower said to me with respect to a suggestion that he could conside undertaking a particular course, "Oh, I have done that stuff already".
