A call for more stubble to be retained as part of the cereal cropping system, has come from one of Australia's leading no-till farmers. Speaking at Ag Texpo (a series of seminars, workshops and field days in SA late last year) Mr Allen Postlethwaite of St Arnaud, Victoria, said that to get the benefits of direct drilling "we must retain stubbles". Mr Postfethwaite and his family have been practising direct drilling on their property for many years with benefits claimed including improvements in soilstructure, less likelihood of erosion, no loss in yields and greater utilisation of available moisture.
