Lemon myrtle a winter warmer

THERE are seven species in the Australian genus of Backhousia, with the lemon myrtle, being a real gem for the garden and also in the kitchen. Lemon myrtle, Backhousia citriodora grows as a medium to tall shrub of 3m-8m tall in most garden situations, while in its natural habitat in the rainforests of eastern Queensland it can develop into a tree of up to 20m tall. The crowning glory of the lemon myrtle is the aromatic foliage, with its truly delightful clear lemon fragrance.The mid-green to dark green leaves are to 12cm long with a width of 2-5cm and their fragrance is released by natural climatic conditions or particularly when the leaves are bruised or crushed.
