Effect of trash on quality of some sugarcane varieties.

The effects of trash on the quality of sugarcane cultivars GT 54/9, G 84/47, G 85/37, G 95/21 and G 95/19 were investigated in Egypt during 1997/98 (cuttings) and 1998/99 (first ratoon crops). Treatments consisted of sugarcane with no trash, dry trash (dry sugarcane leaves) and dry-green trash (dry and green leaves and tops). Dry and green trash significantly increased the brix and fibre percentage, but decreased sucrose percentage, purity and sugar recovery in cuttings and ratoon crops. The highest brix percentage was obtained by cuttings and ratoon crops of G 84/47 and G 85/37, along with cuttings of G 95/21, while G 84/47 was superior to other cultivars in ratoon crops only. Sugarcane milled with its dry-green trash had the highest brix percentage among trash treatments. The sucrose percentage in the juice of G 84/47 ratoon crops was highest, while variations in the sucrose content among cuttings were not significant. Among cuttings, all cultivars were at par in relation to purity percentage,except G 85/37, which recorded lower purity than the rest. G 95/19, G 54/9 and G 84/47 had the highest purity percentage among ratoon crops. The highest sugar recovery percentage was exhibited by GT 54/9 (cuttings) and G 84/47 (ratoon crops). Fibre percentage was highest in G 84/47 (cuttings and ratoon crops) when milled with its dry trash, and green leaves and tops.
