Italian MEP elected EU environment committee chair

The European Parliament’s environment committee on 7 July elected Italian lawmaker Giovanni La Via from the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) as its chairman. La Via replaces German socialist member of European Parliament (MEP) Matthias Groote, who pushed the short-term EU emissions trading scheme (ETS) back-loading supply fix through parliament earlier this year (AGE, April, p5). La Via stood unopposed for the position, and has never participated in the environment committee. But he holds previous experience as an agriculture and rural development committee member.
