From time to time unexpected, temporary lunar phenomena are observed that take the form of localised flashes, coloured glows or obscurations of surface detail; some even briefly masquerade as topographic features. Grouped under the label of TLP (Transient Lunar Phenomena), some of these events seem to recur in specific places on the Moon, but their timing is as yet entirely unpredictable. Aristarchus crater and the area surrounding it in Oceanus Procellanan account for around one-third of all TLP reports; most other TLP appear to occur in mare boundaries and areas with extensive faulting.
