Japan’s JX Nippon and Australia’s Santos have made a “significant oil discovery” offshore Malaysia with the Bestari-1 well in deepwater Block R. The block is located offshore Sarawak, East Malaysia in water depths ranging from 100m (328ft) to 1,400m (4,593ft). Bestari-1 encountered 67m (220ft) of net oil pay in multiple sand packages within the primary Miocene age formation at depths ranging from 1,860m (6,103ft) to 2,702m (8,865ft).
