Sudanese Army Has Reportedly Bombarded Oil Fields After South Sudanese Forces Occupied the Heglig Region

Relations between the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan, which had already been very tense for several months, have greatly deteriorated in recent days and the possibility of an open conflict between the two countries has resurfaced very strongly. The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), the armed forces of South Sudan, which has been an independent state since July 2011, occupied the Heglig region, an important oil province, on 10 April. Sudan launched a military offensive to recapture the zone, and on 14 April the SPLA reported that the Sudanese air force had bombed oil fields there.
