Chemical Engineering in the United States

Given its size,natural resources and commanding presence,it is not surprising that the United States is a world leader in chemical technology.The demand for the skills possessed by trained chemical engineers is fed by more than 150 colleges and universities that are accredited to award the bachelor of science(BS)degree in Chemical Engineering(ChE).Of these,more than 130 offer advanced training with about 120 granting the PhD(or Doctor of Science)degree in ChE or a closely related field.Traditionally,as for my generation,large chemical manufacturers employed most graduates with the remainder going to academia or government.However,this is no longer the case since the technology practiced by chemical engineers is evolving as other sectors of the economy recognize the importance of the skills that we possess.As a result,I will focus here on chemical engineering as a discipline rather than on the chemical process industries.
