LOW-CARBON ECONOMY: Poland blocks EU climate policy

It was not a good day for the Danish EU Presidency. After the stalemate on GMOs, EU climate policy ended up in a bad way. As it had announced, Poland refused, on 9 March, to agree to additional reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the Union beyond 2020. In spite of hours of negotiations, Martin Lidegaard, Danish environment minister and Environment Council president, had no choice but to announce at the end of the Council that Warsaw had stood its ground and that, alone against all the other states, had opposed the Presidency's text for the 'Road map to a low-carbon economy by 2050'.
