Effect of different nitrogen sources on radial growth and dry mycelial weight of Pleurotus djamor (Fr.) Boedijn

An experiment was conducted with P. djamor in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India, involving 7 different nitrogen sources, i.e. ammonium sulfate, L-asparagine, peptone, potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, tryptophan and urea, supplemented at 100 ppm in the basal PDA medium. The control treatments were not supplemented with the nitrogenous sources. Retardation of radial growth in different treatments was observed compared to the control, however, addition of different nitrogen sources in the liquid media reversed the trend and the control showed the least dry weight of the mycelium. The radial growth was highest (85.00 mm) in PDA without nitrogen source, however, statistically it was at par with ammoniom sulfate (79.16 mm), urea (77.50 mm), L-asparagine (76.66 mm) and potassium nitrate (70.83 mm). The radial growth was least (50.83 mm) when the PDA medium was supplemented with sodium nitrate. In contrast, the control showed the lowest dry mycelial weight than the rest of the treatments. Supplementation with potassium nitrate recorded the highest dry mycelial weight and it was significantly higher than supplementation with ammoniom sulfate, peptone, L-asparagine, tryptophan and the control, and the differences were at par with urea and sodium nitrate. The results indicate that none of the nitrogen sources could promote the growth of P. djamor on solid media.
