A field experiment was conducted during winter (rabi) season of 2001-02 on sandy loam soils of CCS HAU Cotton Research Station, Haryana, India. The treatments consisted of three irrigation levels, IW/CPE 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9. At all growth stages, the irrigation level IW/CPE 0.9, being statistically at par with 0.7, produced significantly higher leaf, stem, spike and total dry weight of wheat than 0.5 which was at par with 0.7. Dry matter partitioning to leaves decreased throughout the growth season while that to stem increased up to anthesis and thereafter it decreased up to physiological maturity. The dry matter partitioning to spikes started after jointing and it increased up to physiological maturity. Irrigation level IW/CPE 0.9 recorded significantly higher grain yield than 0.7 and 0.5, and the percent increase due to IW/CPE 0.9 over 0.7 and 0.5 was 14.1 and 21.3%, respectively. The decline in leaf and stem weights at later reproductive phase and maturity resulted in translocation of preanthesis assimilates stored in these plant parts to the developing grains..
