US Energy Secretary calls on oil and gas firms to embrace decarbonization

Speaking on April 26,US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said that oil and gas firms that are slow to embrace decarbonization and investments in low-carbon energy risk being left behind.Granholm warned oil and gas firms,"The bottom line is you have got to move.You cannot hang on and be the Kodak or the Blockbuster Video of the energy world.You have got to diversify.So,before any oil companies start to go bankrupt,you have got to diversify.We went to electric vehicles; they need to move to clean energy solutions."A number of oil and gas firms are already diversifying into the low-carbon energy space amid the ongoing energy transition.According to a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission(FERC)filing issued in the week ending April 23 the British energy major is seeking to begin electricity sales to retail customers in the states of California,Illinois,Ohio,Pennsylvania,and Texas.In the US,BP subsidiary BP Energy Retail and its affiliates own or control over 2K MW of wind generation power.That same week,BP also pledged to eliminate routine flaring at its US onshore operations by 2025.
