A method for carrying out an energy efficient desulfurization and decarbonization of a chimney gas (FG) comprising sulfur oxides and carbon dioxide comprising the steps of: (a) initiating a reaction between an electropositive metal (EPM) and the sulfur oxides and carbon dioxide of said chimney gas (FG); (b) reduce the sulfur oxides and carbon dioxide of said chimney gas (FG) simultaneously in an exothermic reaction with an electropositive metal (EPM) and thereby generating reduced gaseous carbon products and solid reaction products by cooling ; (c) extracting the solid reaction products of the reducing stage (b) in a solvent to generate a first suspension comprising reaction products containing suspended carbon and reaction products containing sulfur; (d) oxidizing the first suspension obtained in step (c) to generate a second suspension comprising reaction products containing suspended carbon and reaction products containing oxidized sulfur; and (e) separating the reaction products containing oxidized sulfur from the reaction products containing suspended carbon, wherein the electropositive metal (EPM) is a metal whose standard electrode potential with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode is less than less -0.5V.
