UK 2020 oil output drops 7% in pandemic hit to recovery

London-UK oil production dropped 7% to a three-year low of 1.03 million b/d in 2020, upending a gradual recovery over the last half- decade, official statistics published Feb. 25 showed, with the industry facing more difficult months to come. The sharp drop in output shown in the latest government statistics has been attributed by the industry to restrictions on offshore activity due to COVID-19, although postponement of maintenance in the first half of 2020 may at first have supported production, before operators moved to catch up on essential work in the third quarter.
