摘要

A jaunt to Neujbnntlland's snowy tip re reals ample cause for concern about the frory Gull. Early last April, I drove From Washington, D.C., to L'Anse aux Meadows, at the northern tip of New foundland, in pursuit of a fairly small, all-white gull withblack feet and a yellow-tipped bill. Up there, the gull is called the ice partridge, probably because it looks quite round, rather like the all-white winter Willow Ptarmigan, another bird referred to in Newfoundland as a partridge. I was searching for amarine bird little known to science. I was chasing an Ivory Gull. The gull lives in the High Arctic, where tew other birds breed, and historically has nested in Canada on Seymour Island, Hllesmere Island, Devon Island, and northern Baffin island, but it comes southward with the sea ice in winter. Until recently, the world population was estimated to be tevver than 14,000 pairs, about 640 percent of which bred in Canada (about 2,400 gulls).
