Us coal traffic jumps 23.1% on week with increases from four major Class i railroads

US coal carloads totaled 75,048 in the week ended April 6, up 23.1% from the previous week, Association of American Railroads data showed Wednesday. Following five weeks of decreasing carloads, coal traffic finally saw an increase as weather and flooding issues began to clear up on Western rails. From the year-ago week, coal carloads dropped 7.9%, the smallest percentage drop since the last week of February saw a year-on-year increase of 1.3%.
