"My friend has just come back from a holiday in Bulgaria. Seeing the dancing bears and monkeys there really sickened her. She said she wanted to come home. I will not consider going there for a holiday now." This is just one example of the many complaints that WSPA and its member societies receive each year from supporters who have had their holidays ruined by seeing animal cruelty. Witnessing animal suffering whilst on holiday is a distressing experience, and you may feel frustrated in your apparentpowerlessness to do anything about it. Perhaps unsurprisingly, WSPA receives hundreds of reports on animal cruelty abroad from tourists each year. Such accounts typically range from the selling of souvenirs made from animals, zoos with poor standards, animal circuses, animal parks and aquaria to sick and starving stray animals, ill-treated working animals, bullfights and other spectacles where animals are cruelly treated.
